Beech Leaf Disease: Protecting Your Beloved Beech

At Willow Tree & Landscaping Service, we understand that beech trees hold a special place in our landscapes and hearts. They show off lush canopies and vibrant foliage, providing shade and beauty. For many of us, they are more than just scenery, they’re a living legacy. So when Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) threatens their beauty and health, we’re here to help you recognize the signs, safeguard your trees, and find comfort in knowing you’re not in this alone.

What Is Beech Leaf Disease?

Beech Leaf Disease is an emerging condition that affects both native and ornamental beech varieties, including American, European, and Oriental beeches, and can be lethal to the trees. This disease is caused by a microscopic nematode called Litylenchus crenatae mccannii.

First spotted in Ohio in 2012, BLD has since spread across much of the Eastern U.S. and parts of Canada, with confirmed cases throughout Pennsylvania. The disease targets buds and leaves, eventually decreasing leaf production and weakening the tree’s ability to feed itself, leading to thinning canopies and, in worst case scenarios, tree death.

Signs of Beech Leaf Disease

Because BLD can lead to severe canopy loss, chronic decline, and even tree death in just a few years, early detection is critical. Frequently inspect your trees for the following signs:

  • Dark, interveinal banding: Dark stripes or bands between the veins, most visible when looking up through the canopy on a bright day.
  • Curling, leathery, or distorted leaves: Leaves may be smaller, thickened, shriveled, or misshapen, with a leathery texture.
  • Premature leaf drop and thinning canopy: Buds may fail to develop, leaves drop early, and the canopy becomes sparse.

If you spot these symptoms or if you would like to implement a BLD protection program for your
trees, schedule a professional tree health consultation with us.

Treatments for Beech Leaf Disease

While BLD is a challenging and emerging disease, recent research offers growing hope, especially for individual trees in residential or landscape settings. Here’s a look at common treatements for BLD:

Targeted Trunk Injections

This systemic treatment delivers fungicide directly into the tree’s vascular system, targeting and
suppressing the nematodes that cause the disease and encourages healthier leaf growth. It can be used as a preventative measure or for trees already showing symptoms and is recommended every 2 years.

Recovery Trunk Sprays

This application is applied directly to the tree trunk to help strengthen the tree’s defences is recommended 3 times per year when the nematodes are active.

Reovery Soil Applications

This low nitrogen soil application helps boost the tree’s immune response and improves root and
canopy vitality.
