Never heard of tree cabling? It’s the process of installing a strong cable on a tree, in order to provide extra support to limbs or tree sections which may be structurally weak, damaged, or not securely attached to the main limb or trunk.

This weakness can occur when bark from two sections of the tree grow down into each other (forming what is called “included bark.”) The process results in less wood holding the two sections together, making them more susceptible to breaking.

Included bark can be avoided by proper pruning when the tree is young. However, for more mature limbs, tree cabling can help to support these structurally weaker limbs and keep your tree looking full and beautiful.

Unfortunately, no cable lasts forever. Once a tree cable has been installed, it’s important to have it inspected every 3-5 years to ensure that the cable and all other hardware is still in good shape.

Recently, a client called Willow Tree and Landscape Services out to his property to inspect a lovely Kentucky coffee tree. A tree cable had been installed years ago, but due to lack of maintenance, it had come undone.

We were able to replace the cable and save the tree. The client was thrilled that his beloved Kentucky coffee tree would remain in his landscape! Watch as Willow Tree owner Ed Yeakel explains the process:
